Symptoms of Teething

Teething can be a challenging period, both for your baby and for you. Understanding the normal symptoms of teething can help you know when to seek medical advice.

Common symptoms include:

  • Irritability
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Fussiness
  • Excessive drooling
  • Loss of appetite
  • Chewing on fingers or toys

However, if your baby experiences fever, rash, diarrhea, or severe swelling, redness, or bleeding of the gums, it’s important to contact a doctor or dentist immediately. These could be signs of an infection or another issue that needs professional attention.

Treatment for Teething

Soothing your baby’s discomfort during teething can be challenging.

Here are some effective strategies to help:

  • Chilled Pacifier or Teething Ring: Cold can help numb the gums and reduce inflammation.
  • Gentle Gum Massage: Use a clean finger or damp gauze to gently rub your baby’s gums.

Avoid medicating your child during teething, as it can mask symptoms of other illnesses. Always follow the recommendations of your child’s doctor or dentist. Do not use topical pain relievers or homeopathic teething gels and tablets, as these have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for safety.

Dental Care for New Teeth

Proper dental care is crucial from the moment your baby’s first tooth appears.

Here’s how to care for those tiny new teeth:

  • Clean Daily: Gently wipe your baby’s tooth and gums with a damp washcloth at least twice a day and before bed.
  • Flossing: Once your child has two teeth that touch, begin cleaning between them daily using floss or an interdental brush.

Your child should have their first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months of their first tooth eruption. At Kids 1st Pediatric Dentistry, we strive to make this first visit positive and comfortable. We’ll check your baby’s teeth and gums to ensure they are developing correctly and provide tips for maintaining good oral hygiene.
